Historical Grand Tour

Discover the rich history of the Grand Hotel Amrâth Kurhaus during a historical tour of the iconic hotel. Since the 19th century, the Kurhaus has played a special role in the history of Scheveningen. During the tour, you will learn more about the origins of the hotel, its distinctive architecture, and the many stories hidden behind its monumental façade.

You can choose from a short tour of approximately 20 minutes or an extensive tour of approximately 1 hour.

Historical Origins

The origins of the Kurhaus date back to 1818, when Scheveningen became the first Dutch seaside resort to receive permission to build a small wooden bathhouse. Initiator Jacob Pronk built the pavilion on Verlengde Badhuisstraat, inspired by the English fashion in which seawater was considered to have healing properties. Visitors had themselves pulled into the sea by horses to relieve various ailments.

In 1828, the wooden bathhouse was replaced by the ‘Municipal Bathhouse’ designed by architect Zeger Reyers. Its success led to an expansion in 1856. On the same site, Johann Friedrich Henkenhaf built the first Kurhaus in 1884-1885. After the building burned down in 1886, the hotel was rebuilt in record time and reopened before the 1887 bathing season.

Over the years, the Kurhaus grew into a special meeting place on the Dutch coast, where countless guests, artists, and prominent figures stayed.

Grand Tour

Over the years, the Kurhaus has undergone various functions and changes. For example, the library, conversation room, and spa rooms disappeared, while later, among other things, conference rooms and other facilities were added.

However, much of the historic grandeur has been preserved. One of the absolute highlights is the spectacular Kurzaal. During the guided tour, our guide will take you through the hotel and tell you more about the history, architecture, and special stories of the Kurhaus.

Would you like to relax a little longer after the tour? Then separately reserve a High Tea at Restaurant Waves at the Kurhaus, with a beautiful view of the North Sea. The High Tea is not included in the guided tour and is reserved and paid for separately.
