125 years of Escher at Kurhaus

In 2023 it will be 125 years since Escher was born. The jubilee year is being celebrated in the Kunstmuseum and Escher in Het Paleis with 3 exhibitions. In collaboration with various cultural institutions, schools, neighborhoods and entrepreneurs in The Hague, the Hofstad will be transformed into the city of Escher.

Exhibitions can be admired at various locations in The Hague. This is also the case in the Amrâth Grand Hotel Kurhaus, where 14 of his works of art can be admired.

125 years of Escher

This year marks the 125th anniversary of the artist M.C. Escher (1898-1972) was born. His work consists of early woodcuts of people and unparalleled depictions of nature and landscapes.

M.C. Escher became world famous for his artwork with optical illusions. 'Waterfall', 'Belvédère' and 'Relativity'. Escher studied architecture at the Delft University of Technology and has exhibited at the Pulchri Studio in The Hague, among others. The Kunstmuseum Den Haag has the world's largest museum collection of Escher's work.

M.C. Escher is best known for his impossible drawings such as Climbing and Descending and Relativity. But also for his metamorphoses, Air and Water and Reptiles.

In the three exhibitions of M.C. Escher focuses on several aspects. The three exhibitions are:

  • Just like Escher

Different world

In this exhibition you will really experience Escher's work. Think of the famous prints in which the optical illusions of M.C. Escher, but also the impossible architecture, reflection and nature. The interaction with the partner of M.C. Escher named Gijs Van Vaerenbergh creates a unique experience together.
